"Long Story Short" taping with Leslie Wilcox and Superstar YouTuber Ryan Higa at PBS-Hawaiʻi.  TeeHee! Heading over to Hilo on Wednesday to get Ryanʻs backstory.  Not sure if I am doing a TV special, just pickup up b-roll for LSS or maybe a documentary.  Debating.  I find this young man interesting.  A whole new world.  If you are not familiar with Ryanʻs work, check him out on YouTube - or my personal favorite: Daily Life of Rustin Hieber (17 Million Views!).  Not sure yet when Long Story short will be broadcast...I have to edit an 80 minute interview down to 24 minutes!

It wasnʻt sold out but it was a sweet opening nonetheless.  ONE VOICE once again brought out the "stars" of the documentary and their parents and families.  The former Song Leaders updated the audience on their studies and paths since 2007.   Meanwhile ONE VOICE is extended at Kahala and premieres at Kapolei Theaters.

August 24, 2011

Under a Jarvis Moon successfully screens at a nearly packed Hawaiʻi Theater.  Opening acts include Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club, a hula by Noelle Kahanu and a performance by Vicky Holt Takamine and her halau.  Speeches by Senators Akaka, Inouye and Congresswoman Hanabusa.  It was a memorable evening that culminated with a Q & A between the audience and the three colonists who were present at the premiere.

Wooohooo! Under a Jarvis Moon re-edit is complete and ready for its presentation at the Hawaiʻi Theater on August 24th and a PBS broadcast on August 25th! Congratulations and a shout out to super woman and passionate first-time filmmaker Noelle Kahanu for her perseverance and dedication to community storytelling.

Itʻs TRUE!  I am helping another friend complete her passion project dream.  This one belongs to Amy Hanaialiʻi Gilliom and sheʻs calling it LOCAL BOYZ with a plan to air it on OC16 sometime this Fall. Premise?  40-something-year-old Local Guys living on Maui and sharing their trials, tribulations and joy of being local, divorced, married, in transition, unemployed -- the brown skin pidgin version of Men Of A Certain Age.  And yes they own pitbulls, drive big trucks and eat onolicious Maui foodies.  I predict a home run for Amy with her quirky, off the rails, very local concept series (if she can get a "PG" rating and an inspired editor).

July 30, 2011

13th Annual Pauahi Awards gala fundraiser for Bishop Museum is held on the Great Lawn on a beautiful day/evening honoring Gov. Abercrombie and OHA Trustee Haunani Apoliona.  It was actually a delicious event featuring exquisite culinary surprises from Hawaiʻiʻs best restaurants!  Donʻt miss it next year!  Itʻs a great cause!

July 21-22, 2011

Inspiring, energetic and constantly moving youthful minds - meeting with Neenz Faleafine who explains the benefits of going Google + and more; next day listenning to John Garciaʻs passionate presentation on the new and improved co-working environment he is calling The Green House.  Visit this movement becoming a reality very quickly at www.higreenhouse.com.  Itʻs cool.

Dr. Pat DeLeon (Ph.D., J.D., M.P.H) and Chief of Staff of US Sen. Daniel Inouye (employed by DKI for 38 years!) and a dear family friend notifies me that he will be retiring soon.   Dr. DeLeon is a "passionate  and relentless advocate for psychology’s responsibilities and recognition in bettering society. He has been the leader in many initiatives that have transformed the field of psychology and of  the public’s perception of psychologists. Dr. DeLeon has been the leading advocate for psychologists’ greater involvement in the public policy process. Through his writings, presentations, and personal mentoring, he has brought attention to both the many contributions that psychologists could have in the public policy arena and to their relative absence from the scene. A Washington “insider” as long-term staff member of U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, Dr. DeLeon is extremely well versed in the art of politics and the advocacy process."  Pat touched more than the psychology sector.  His work in our community and elsewhere has been monumental.  His integrity, vision and support of creative for a better life will be felt far into the future.  He has been a great mentor and a great friend and I will miss his presence in the DKI office - especially in his own personal office which was once my fatherʻs.  As my dear niece recently wrote: "I saw first hand from the Hill last year...and from our trip to Alaska what he does for the state of Hawaiʻi, the state of Alaska, the locals, the community and the natives...and how he does it without the need to put a claim to any of it."

Xtreme Menternship Program concept: take a recent High School graduate on his/her way to College and offer them an intensive week of shadowing a media professional.  Jonah Dias from Hilo (and a recent graduate of KS Big Island) had a great time with MICHAEL HARRIS (News Director of Sunrise Hawaii News Now) and JASON SUAPAIA (President, 1013 Integrated) and me.  Mahalo Michael and Jason for participating!

June 19-24, 2011

Spending the week in Anchorage, Alaska at the invitation of CITC CEO Gloria OʻNeil.  Another educational adventure and introductions.  Hooked up with Sen. Inouyeʻs Chief of Staff from Washington DC Dr. Pat DeLeon.  Off we flew to Kodiak Island taking a bush plane to Larsen Bay.  My highlights here? Visiting the Alutiiq Museum.  Meeting with the an Elder at the village.  Skimming the curviture of the planet on tiny planes in search of bears.  Checking in on the health center at Larsen Bay.

June 15, 2011

Leaving LA for Honolulu after a trip to SF where we stopped in to visit Ivy who is wrapping up her feature film called THE DARKEST HOUR (she's the visual effects producer) out in December.  We also stayed over at Mark & Julie's -- catching up with the Chairman (Iron Chef) & Hawai'i-5-0-on-steriod's own WO FAT.

Who watched Kaui Kamanaʻo of Halau o Kamuela propose to Miss Aloha Hula 2010  Mahealani Mika Hirao-Solem Kumu last night? Twas sweet to see!  Needless to say, it made for "good television".  Now itʻs time to prepare for kahiko night - the day started with a trip to the volcano to check in on Chinky Mahoe.

April 26, 2011

Producing in the field means finding the stories and today I drove with cameraman Gene Kois and soundman John Saimo to Waimea to catch up with Kumu hula O'Brian Eselu and his kane as they graced the gorgeous home-ranch of the extraordinary "Queenie" Dowsett and her paniolo husband Jamie.  Both octogenarians, they are Aloha.

Monday in overcast Hilo - staying at the beautiful Seaside Hotel - in the middle of all things Merrie Monarch.  Last night we watched Halau O Kekuhi's rehearsal.  It's the buzz - a must see this Wednesday night!

April 24, 2011

Hau'oli la pakoa!  Today is Easter Sunday and also  the official opening of Merrie Monarch Festival Week in Hilo.  Production crews are arriving today through Wednesday in preparation for the live broadcasts set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Meanwhile halau are hitting the stage for their last minute practices!

April 17, 2011

It's Sunday evening and all Merrie Monarch Festival broadcast producers are writing scripts or returning from shoots in preparation for the upcoming television shows. Scheduled next Sunday evening: BACKSTAGE and THE BEST OF THE MERRIE MONARCH starting at 6:30p and 7:00p respectively.  The Merrie Monarch Festival broadcasts of the competition begins Thursday April 28th on KFVE!  You can also watch it on the worldwide WEB!  Here's the real scoop: Halau O Kekuhi will perform for free on Wednesday evening and here's an excerpt from Nalani Kanaka'ole's press release:

"This year Halau O Kekuhi is privileged to be artistically collaborating with twenty-four Hawaiian kapa makers.  In an unprecedented collaboration for modern Hawaii to view, these kapa makers are producing most of the pa`u (skirts) and malo (loincloths) that will outfit the dancers.  “We all want to see our kapa pieces moving and functioning on stage.  It is one thing to make kapa and put it up on the wall but the function of kapa is to be worn,” says Marie Macdonald, the formidable leader of the group of kapa makers."

Bob Liljstrand hosts a tour of his parents home now famously known as the Liljstrand House or the house built by the famous Vladimir Ossipoff. Turns out that Bob's father Howard was crazy about taking films of life during the 50's and 60's in Hawai'i and around the world - and that's how he and Chris Lee got together discussing the HKG Archives and its preservation which led to the tour.  More importantly, Dr. Howard Liljstrand was the Aiea Plantation Clinic doctor in my small-kine-kid days when I fell out of mango trees, got my hand smashed in the door of one of those heavy 1950s automobiles or battled a case of measles...small-kine-world.

February 20, 2011

More good news for ONE VOICE - the documentary will be screened at the 2011 San Francisco International Film Festival on March 13, 16 and 20!  Check it out!  PIC just completed a successful series called DEEP WATERS: A Pacific Film Series at Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies.   Every seat was taken for this extraordinary event honoring the late, great filmmaker Merata Mita.  Himiona Grace a staff member of the New Zealand Film Archive not only brought Merata's films from Aotearoa but participated in the panel discussions.  Himiona has had a great trip here catching up with people and visiting sites including the HKG Archives. He told me last night (we partied at the Pacific Marina Inn restaurant and bar near the airport - packed with Hawaiians, Hawaiian music and choke foodies - it's a Go To spot for sure!) how impressed he was with our Native Hawaiian Filmmakers.  Speaking of which: watch the career of recent ACM graduate Aina Paikai!  His recent work, MOKE ACTION, is local hilarious.  Just saying...

Look out for the premier of HIKI NO  in a week --- PBS-Hawai'i's major statewide effort to produce the first nationwide student news network!  Will youth beat out local news establishments?  Or will PBS find it hard to keep students focused?  Stay tuned... and best of luck to all who have worked so hard to bring this dream to fruition!  Go Leslie!

Kung Hee Fat Choy!  The New Year (of the Rabbit) is well underway and Juniroa (that would be mainly me and Renea these days - all others are contracted) is deep into preps for the Kamehameha School's Song Contest (I am really enjoying the Social Media Team at KS CRC - John Garcia inspiring me tremendously - and may be the cause for me to finally move away from this 'fake' blog and enter the world of cyberspace storytelling); I am endlessly proud of Ty Sanga's acceptance of his film STONES into The Sundance Film Festival; we're working on content for the 2011 Merrie Monarch Festival...and I am thrilled to be associated with Hawaii's first film and video digital archives. Former Film Commissioner Donne Dawson recently returned from Tahiti and Na'alehu's successful showing of his film Papa Mau: The Wayfinder.  Mostly, at this moment, I am most proud of my dear friend and high school classmate and House Member Rep. Mina Morita for her recent acceptance as the new Chair of the PUC - Go Mina!

Just returned from Lana'i after visiting with Kepa and Onaona Maly of the Lana'i Culture & Heritage Center.   They've done an incredible job creating a rich space filled with memories.  The Center will be a partner in the HKG Digital Archive effort.  At present, the pilot project is creating a temporary space at 420 Waiakamilo Road!  We're working closely with another partner, Hawaii News Now to help us configure the space.  Meanwhile, we look forward to our new home at UH-West O'ahu in 2012! Other partners in the pilot program of the Archive include:  Gene Kois (of Videololo fame), KGMB News (1978 Constitutional Convention), Bishop Museum, Lyman Museum, CLEAR (Rice & Roses), Victoria Keith Productions, PBS Hawai'i, Hawai'inuiakea, Sinclair Library, Na Maka o ka 'Aina, Hula Preservation and Juniroa Productions.
